Issue 107. Is it getting colder? Or do we feel the same?

DETOX, JOKES, ICE SAINTS, CROWS

Good Morning and Welcome,

To issue No.107. Good morning, did you spot that? Morning! Chilly enough isn’t it?

South Kerry by the numbers

  • 25.32: km between Cahersiveen & Sneem, as the crow flies (62.4km by road).

  • 21.2: km between Knightstown & Derrynane (42.1km by road).

  • 6.98: km between Ballinskelligs & Waterville, specifically between Cafe Cois Tra & The Beachcove (13.9km by road).

Will we all get helicopters? Jetpacks maybe?

First, a word from this week’s sponsor

It’s very empty. Got something to promote? It’s waay cheaper than a Facebook ad.

It’s The Signs of South Kerry 🎺🎺🎺

Where’s this?

Congratulations to last week’s winners

  • Dave Shortall

Congratulations once again to Dave, who correctly identified that it’s been the sign for Foilmore Community Centre for the last two weeks.

Auntie Agnes’ Angle

She’s exploring.

Dear Reader, Happy Friday!

I hope this Oracle finds you well!

I notice since the start of May how hectic my days have become and I find myself craving space and freedom.

I have enough experience to know that if I don’t address this now, it will escalate into a significant exhaustion, physically and emotionally.

So I’m exploring small 5 minute activities that I can intertwine into my day. Nature is the hero in this story.

Scientific research confirms that Nature is our best medicine. I’m finding time for a walk outside for at least 20 minutes; the doggies are helping with that but I need more.

Here are some things I’m also doing to help slow down

  • opening the windows for fresh air & allowing the sounds of nature in, birdsong, wind and, believe it or not rain!

  • creating spaces for plants to live with me, spending time with them daily

  • hanging pictures and paintings of natural landscapes and animals, allowing myself 5-10 minutes of daydreaming about being there.

  • walking  barefoot on the grass, even if it’s only while hanging out the clothes

  • burn candles or incense with woody or floral scents

It is helping …..

Let me know your ways of reconnecting with the endless benefits of being in contact with the natural world

Thanks Agnes.

Chillier than usual?

It would seem to be an opinion held by most of us that last winter was not kind. We had a great Christmas & New Year and a couple of weeks ago, it really felt like the good weather was with us for the duration.

Since then, it seemed to me to be unusually cold for the time of year, but that was just me being uneducated. I didn’t know we were in the midst of the Scairbhín, or An Gaoth Scairbhín, a period of unseasonally inclement weather between mid-April and mid-May. For those of you well versed in the topic, I apologise for my ignorance. For those new to it like myself, a word of caution: this is a rabbit hole of black hole proportions. Before you know it, you’ll be gorging yourselves on Mamertus, Pancras of Rome, Servatius of Tongeren, Boniface of Tarsus & all those lads. You’ve been warned.

According to Met Éireann, we are currently 1.1°C colder than the long term average for May & 1.1°C warmer than the average for April. Same as it ever was.

This week, Tim’s back to his favourite subject

Best Coffee in South Kerry

So two weeks to go, can anyone catch The Watch House?

It couldn’t be tighter for second place with 4 establishments without 5% between them. Delighted to see newcomer The River Cafe make it into the top 10.

Ahamore tearooms continue to dominate in the hot chocolate stakes, should they be handed the crown* now?

Last couple of weeks, who gets your vote?

Also, thanks to Eanna & Deirdre for getting in touch to confirm both The Villa & Camo’s are keeping the omelette dream alive, I’ll be in.

*No crowns will be awarded. If anyone has any ideas on a trophy, don’t keep them to yourselves.
