Issue 12. Sponsors, Sport, Substantial amounts of Pizza

Three months in... I've run out of subtitles

Good Morning and Welcome,

To issue No. 12 This week sees the start of sponsors, well ads. There’ll be no more than 4 an issue and all will be relevant to us in South Kerry. Unfortunately, after many years I’ve learned that (this) man cannot live on bare faced cheek alone. If you’d like to sponsor/advertise get in touch.

Also a bit of sport, some social good, more festival fever & everything else. Huge props, once again go to the excellent Wild Derrynane book by Vincent Hyland, you’ll soon see why.

South Kerry by the numbers:

  • 10: Is the number of wildflower species along the Greater Skellig Coast that will have their first flowering in July, including Fleabane (both common & Mexican), Sea Aster & Great Willowherb.

  • 6: Red spots on a Moth? In the daytime? Must be a butterfly, no. That’ll be a 6-Spot Burnet Moth, in flight, currently, around sand dunes. Be nice though, if attacked they’ll release Hydrogen Sulphide.

  • 4: Red spots & 2 red lines on a moth, in daylight? That’s not a butterfly either, it’s a Cinnabar moth, eating ragwort.

First, A word from this week’s sponsor

Iveragh Eagles RFC offer you the raffle of a lifetime. For just €20 you could find yourself watching (with an incredibly grateful spouse/child/fanatic) the most anticipated game of the year, before strolling back to the luxury 4 star Herbert Park Hotel to calm down. These tickets are long sold out and on resale sites for over €1000 each, almost as much as a 4 star hotel in Dublin, both could be yours for €20. Get them NOW

The Festival of Sneem

Sneem Summer Festival is very much in full swing and plenty to look forward to throughout the weekend. All details here

  • 2pm tomorrow afternoon at The Church of the Transfiguration there’s a talk on William Spotswood Green'Fisheries Scientist, Mountaineer, Explorer and Man of God'. Also, the guy that sketched the Faraday coming into Ballinskellings Bay with the first Atlantic cable, I think. Fascinating.

  • The Rising are on tonight at 8.30pm.

  • For the early birds, there is an Owl display at 9am tomorrow.

  • What would you want to be doing at midday tomorrow that wasn’t throwing an axe?

  • Or save yourself for midday Sunday and climb atop the rodeo bull, in a sumo suit.

Its The South Kerry Close Up, Sort of 🎺🎺🎺

Apologies again about the lack of heat recovery systems info, one day.

Finally, I’d like to bid a fond farewell to Fr Gerard Finucane and wish him good luck in Causeway. Fr Finucane is everything you could wish for in a Parish Preist, for both committed churchgoers and those more like myself. He was a huge asset to our community and will be sorely missed.
