Issue 17. New Beginnings, Old Stories

Preists, Gardeners, Drum N Bass, Quiz

Good Morning and Welcome,

To issue No.17 Do you know how to spell Cahe/irs/civeen officially? Can you guess what section of the newsletter this might heavily influence this week?

Also a look at an ancestor, full credit to a contemporary & everything else exciting.

South Kerry by the numbers:

  • 523: Mentions of “Cahersiveen” in the Irish Times newspaper archive. The first was in 1916, but common usage started in 1970.

  • 1,199: Mentions of “Caherciveen” in the Irish Times newspaper archive. The first was in 1862, but usage continues up to the present day.

  • 13,345: Mentions of “Cahirciveen” in the Irish Times newspaper archive. The first was in 1860, but usage continues up to the present day.

  • 68: Mentions of “Cahirsiveen” in the Irish Times newspaper archive. The first was in 1970, usage continues up to the present day, but given it’s only used 68 times, we can at least rule out one option.

First, a word from this week’s sponsor

Have you got your tickets yet? No? Well, this is your best chance to get them, the only remaining travel packages are around €1300 for the New Zealand game, if you are looking for match tickets for the other games you’ll be disappointed too.

Even if you have no interest at all, this is the only rugby club in South Kerry and it needs your help to keep punching well above its weight. Iveragh Eagles RFC has no pitch, no clubhouse, and no senior team (so buy a ticket or two and help us change that). In the last few months, two lads have played for Ireland U18s, 2 girls for Munster U17s & our first Munster Senior Women’s cap. A set of achievements that any club in the country would be proud of, let alone one of the smallest, youngest & most isolated. Have you bought a ticket yet?

Also, if you know of any boy or girl u14 across Iveragh who might like to give rugby a go, then we’re back training on 31/8 at 11am, Over The Water, Cahersiveen. Come along, we’ll give you a great welcome. If you want to find out more, just get in touch.

Lastly, BUY A TICKET.

125 years ago today*, South Kerry took its news foray

That is the front page of the Killarney Echo & South Kerry Chronicle which debuted on newsstands 125 years ago *this coming Tuesday. Much like its modern day counterpart, the vast majority of its four pages are all about Killarney. South Kerry does get exactly 2.5 look ins, a lament to a young man called Brennan, who drowned whilst bathing in Finnians Bay, a call for more funds to be raised for the O’Connell Memorial Church & half an article which we can very much identify with today…

Would you believe, in 1899, prior to motor vehicles becoming a fixture on our roads, the paper chronicles how Killarney & South Kerry have been overwhelmed by cyclists & looking towards the future, it predicted that tourists may struggle on “steep gradients and steep curves, will need the utmost skill to carry them safely through”. A skill, many of us may argue, that still needs to be developed.

It’s The Signs of South Kerry 🎺🎺🎺

Thanks James, you’ve done us all a great service

James O’Shea, Head Gardener of Derrynane House is set to retire shortly after an incredible 49 years of service. I can’t be the only one in South Kerry to be ever grateful to have a resource like Derrynane on our doorsteps. It’s my first go to when plagued by visitors, undoubtedly helped along by James & his teams’ formidable work. So thanks for all those years James, enjoy your well earned retirement.
