Issue 24. Congratulations & Consultations

Aurora, running, GREENWAY, Houses, Bees, Rocks

Good Morning and Welcome,

To issue No.24 This week we, the public, of South Kerry, must get our consultee on. Agnes is back on the healing horse, Tim re-imagining ancient landscapes in seconds, first round of pint poll results & rakes of stuff happening.

South Kerry by the numbers:

  • 8.3: % was the amount of increase in the average house price in Kerry for the third quarter of 2024

  • 215,000: € is what you’ll pay for the ‘average’ house in Kerry.

  • 1100: € is the monthly rent of the only place available in South Kerry.

First, a word from this week’s sponsor

Local tonic for the world Dani is back with her last batch of classes for the year. Good woman that she is, she’s offering Orac readers a coupon code, 'ORACLE10' for this term if you book by Tuesday the 15th here

GREENWAY Consulting on Thursday

So after a week of phone tag with our man in the council, the above is essentially what we will be consulting on. Orange, blue or green? We decide (well at least, we get to give an opinion) I’d be very interested to hear any opinions from any of you, so just hit reply. All info is here. Well, it was there earlier in the week, but seems to have been removed… Hopefully, it returns before Thursday… If not, see you in Cahersiveen library 3-8pm.

Northern Lights came back last night

Herself took this last night, wonderful isn’t it, isn’t it? Unbelievable how quickly I’ve gone from thinking this was absolutely once in a lifetime stuff, to just feeling a bit conned by the fact this is not what you see with the naked eye. If anyone is running an anti ‘grumpy cynic’ course, then you have your first student. For anyone less cynical, looks like there’s another chance to ‘see’ them tonight.

It’s The Signs of South Kerry 🎺🎺🎺

An actual sign this week, so

Where’s this sign?

Congratulations to last week’s Winners 🍰🍰🍰

Last week, it was of course, the former sign of the Smugglers Cafe, Portmagee thanks again to Ger for sending it in.

  • Patricia O'Connell

  • David Fitz

  • Siobhán Clifford

This, is turning into a real race for the title, David Fitz has put himself very much in pole position…

Auntie Agnes Answers

Agnes has a problem to solve that I’m sure we’ve all pondered:

Agnes
Going by national averages, I may only have another 10 to 15 years to live so I'm sure I will never get to cycle/walk the South Kerry Greenway. My question is, after I have died do you think I will be able to return to cycle/walk or perhaps even haunt the South Kerry Greenway?

Agnes Answers:

Dearest Reader,

Thank you for your woe, Reader! Yes, it is concerning to think about the progress or lack of that associated with our much anticipated South Kerry Greenway.

At the current rate, Many of us may not get the chance to feel the wind blowing through our bangs as we pedal that beautiful stretch of coastline. Arthritis or death, whichever may come. Haunting is an interesting option, are bikes available to ghosts? Might be a good suggestion for Casey Cycles to consider.

We could also start some kind of remembrance record that would allow us to be acknowledged at various points of the greenway, nothing as big as a statue, I’d make do with an attractive bench.

However, the best option is we rise above the national average and remain supple enough to ride the Greenway carefree when they manage to get it done. My recommendations to achieve this are. : love yourself and everyone, eat real food, be yourself, rest, laugh, dance, do these things as often as you can.

The Oracle’s Fifth Cartoon

Tim, the gift, has decided to show us his working this week. Hypnotic, isn’t it?

Aren’t we lucky to have him? Stay tuned for a new subject matter from Tim in the coming weeks.

Everything Else

  • Swimming in pink, isn’t she? Or he, well both should be at White Strand Castlecove on Sunday 2pm for breast cancer research, more here

  • Will you be best in pink? Find out next Friday in Rosie’s Ballinskelligs.

  • There’s a Subsea Cable Security Symposium going on on Valentia as we speak, if you like your conferences alliteration filled.

  • Gigantic praise should be heaped on those champions of South Kerry, Valentia Island Vermouth, for their massive win at Blas na hÉireann, being named the ‘Best of Kerry’ & ‘Best Artisan Producer’.

  • Pizza & wine is back in Ballinskelligs, more here

  • The Skellig Coast Archaeology Festival starts next week October 2024 with events across Iveragh in Castlecove, Ballinskelligs, Dromid, Portmagee, Valentia Island and Cahersiveen. Tickets here. Rock on.

  • A 7 week Beekeeping for Beginners course kicks off at the end of the month in Waterville, email [email protected] for all the info.

  • Fox in the Box are having a fun run tomorrow @10am, more here

  • Now, I may have mentioned this before, but the Iveragh Eagles megaraffle closes tonight. Not only is it the smallest, most isolated club in the country, through no fault of its members, is in a very difficult period. Not only does this club produce Internationals & Munster players on the regular, it also turns kids who might not have found their sporting niche into passionate rugby players. So buy a few tickets and let’s keep those Eagles flying high.

Just Announced

An Oracle first! A book signing in Pink Bee Waterville coming up at the end of the month, more here, bravo Pink Bee. AND there’s chocolate, Skelligs chocolate.

Our Community Smiles

Below is Mr Leo Witter, who recently knocked an item off his bucket list by singing Smile at, you guessed it, the Charlie Chaplin statue. How many of us have knocked an item off their bucket list recently? (if you have, I’m all ears, just hit reply)

Thanks

Busy enough now, isn’t it?

In the week the Oracle (finally) hits 600 subscribers, we had quite the multimedia extravaganza to celebrate, didn’t we? See you all Thursday in the library.

Thanks for reading. Please forward at least one person this email and force/cajole/encourage them to click the button below. Today.

Good luck, be well
