Issue 30. Voting & Sloganing
Artists, Talking, Cards, Catchments
Good Morning and Welcome,
To issue No.30: This week, there are two opportunities to listen to artists and a couple of elections.
South Kerry by the numbers:
1/200: Are the current odds for Michael Healy-Rae to retain his seat.
1/20: For Danny Healy-Rae.
1/10: For Pa Daly.
1/10: Norma Foley.
1/4: Michael Cahill.
NB: For the non-gamblers amongst us, 1/200 means if you put €200 on Michael Healy-Rae, you’d win yourself €1. So the bookies are fairly certain these are our 2024 elected representatives. Are we really that predictable
First, a word from this week’s sponsor
Welcome to the wonderful world of Willie's Wild Atlantic Way Wines & Whiskey - Kerry's wisest and worthiest wine and whiskey warehouse, which has weathered through thirty-one winters! Their winter wishlist weaves world-class wines, warming whiskeys, and wondrous liqueurs, working wonders for wholesome Secret Santa warriors with winning gifts.

One word to the wise; Willie’s are offering a 10% discount on December 7th, to claim, head to the counter and say: “We've wandered to Willie's Wild Atlantic Way Wines & Whiskey, we await Willie’s wonderful winter windfall!”. Simple.
There’s an election on, don’t you know
With less than a week to go before the polls open, there are a few more slogans to add and a look at each candidate’s priorities. As a general observation, I’m in equal parts delighted that there are fewer posters about and baffled why there are so many posters of Michael Martin heading out of Cahersiveen, just why?
Michael Cahill: Experience working for you. Michael’s prioritising “Health, Housing, Education, Roads, Planning, Childcare, Sports Facilities, Social Welfare, Farming/Fishing & Business Supports to name but a few”. He may need to revisit the definition of priorities.
Norma Foley: Effective & committed representation. I think Norma’s prioritising Work, Business, Housing & Education (as far as these are the words in bold in her leaflet).
Linda Gordon-Kelleher: Kudos to Linda, she is the only candidate who has called to our house, which resembles a building site, so bonus points there. Unfortunately, our house is a building site so I’ve lost the leaflet, but I’m sure there was something about hard work in there, which she’s demonstrated, amicably.
Pa Daly: Vote for Change. Pa, well, the party, are prioritising housing, childcare, USC, carers & a United Ireland.
Stephanie O’Shea: Stephanie well, the party, are prioritising housing, childcare, USC, carers & a United Ireland.
Danny Healy-Rae: I’ve no leaflet to go on & his last Instagram post is him playing the accordion in 2020. So potentially accordions.
Michael Healy-Rae: A vote for Michael Healy-Rae is a vote for hard work. Again, I’ve no leaflet, but he is undeniably working hard on social media stardom, Christmas number 1’s etc.
Michelle Keane: Make Ballyduff Great Again. Seems to be the only priority, I can’t say anything against the sentiment but doesn’t do much for us in South Kerry.
Cleo Murphy: Greens Deliver. Cleo is prioritising climate action, housing & support for children & families. Kudos to Cleo for her uniqueness in understanding what the word priorities means.
Billy O’Shea: This election is about your future. Billy is prioritising childcare, housing, vital infrastructure projects, care of older people & children with disabilities, And a fair justice and migration system. Can I make that priorities gag again?
Catherina O’Sullivan: No leaflet, can’t find a slogan but seems to be prioritising small business & a variety of topics around asylum seekers.
Thomas (Tom) McEllistrim: He’s economical on slogans, but is binging on priorities, we have; housing, health, immigration, business, roads, youth affairs, city status, agriculture, community, tourism, education… Honestly, I’ve skipped a good few.
Mary Fitzgibbon: no leaflet, honestly can’t find a thing.
Mike Kennedy: Trust in me/Strong new voice. Mike is prioritising Housing, Schools & Childcare, and tourism. Bonus points for being able to prioritise, obviously.
Brandon Begley: no leaflet, honestly can’t find a thing.
Cian Prendiville: no leaflet, based on his Instagram he likes canoeing, I mean, how bad?
Next week I’m foolishly aiming for a ‘before the polls open’ edition, so will see if I can get hold of any of the above in the interim.
It’s The Signs of South Kerry 🎺🎺🎺
It’s back & it’s redder than ever.

Last week, it was of course, a different game entirely, so you are all winners! Well done.

She mentioned something about not getting actual, bonified problems & flounced off with a flourish.
Please, convince Agnes we need her
