Well worth it for the cakes alone I’ve heard. Book here.

There is nothing which has yet been contrived by man, by which so much happiness is produced as by a good tavern.

Samuel Johnson, who wrote the first dictionary, knows his onions, like.

The Inny Tavern, Dromid

What better tavern could there be, than one run by its community?

The good people of Forbairt na Dromoda Teo are hoping to rescue & run this one, but they need our help.

For a bit of history (lifted directly from the gofundme) Cillín Liath which is one of Ireland’s newest villages had its inception many years ago with the foundation of a national school (Scoil Náisiúnta Chillín Liath) in 1973, it remained just this for many years with the community having no access to community facilities for its people or its youth. In the late 1980s, the O’Connor family of Toorsaleen came up with the idea of building a pub/foodstore for the people of Dromid and hence began the birth of the Inny Tavern Bar & Foodstore.

The current owners of the Inny Tavern/Tábhairne na hÚine have decided to retire and the business has been up for sale for two years. They have decided to take the business off the market. The option to sell the licence and the building as a separate entity is now very much a real possibility. Having watched a community develop over the years, if this option comes to pass then the shop and pub steeped in history and folklore of 35 years will close.

Therefore the directors and management at Forbairt na Dromoda have decided to examine the possibility of purchasing one of Ireland’s few community owned pubs/shop. We have raised enough for a deposit to purchase the business and sourced a bank loan to add to this. However, there is a deficit to be made up and to that end, we wish to appeal to our community and our diaspora at home and abroad to help us succeed.

That’s where we come in dear Oracler’s, donate here. To those cleaning living amongst us who feel that we have enough pubs, I refer you to one of our finest literary minds, a frequent frequenter of such establishments;

When things go wrong and will not come right, Though you do the best you can, When life looks black as the hour of night – A pint of plain is your only man. Flann O’Brien/Myles na gCopaleen

We Should Celebrate the Open in Close Season.

Thanks to everyone who are still getting in touch. To all of you out and about this week, do call in to one of these brave businesses still serving our towns & villages.

Well done you three, mighty stuff!

Who will we put on the Skellig list?

The what?

On this day that’s full of love, I thought I’d take the chance to look back on a custom which began in the mid 1700's, the Skellig Lists.

In those days, marraige was banned during lent, so the early part of the year was a time for fervent matchmaking, South Kerry, as ever, made its own rules. The monks on the Skelligs used the Julian calendar, meaning lent happened later on the Skelligs, so if lent was fast approaching, you could still marry on the Skelligs.

A gossiper’s dream, the lists were made up of humourous verse focused on those still single, whom the community thought was about time they fixed that. A feeling, any single person will tell you, is very much alive today…

Here’s one from Cahersiveen in the 1940’s

Across the street lives a tradesman neat,

And he pounds and pounds all day.

He brings fresh life to the young housewife,

For he makes new soles they say.

A more coherent explanation & more examples can be found here.

So, time to polish up your funny bones and

No names please, if we get a good few, I’ll get a boat for them.
