Issue 45. Something, Something, Humerous Title
Cash, Car, Ha Ha's
Good Morning and Welcome,
To issue No.45: This week, there’s more Agnes, Tim vigourously ignores sitting on political fences, a load of cash for South Kerry & an absolute bargain!
South Kerry by the numbers:
1063: Residential properties were sold in Kerry last year
275,165: € was the average price.
7.1: % of all properties in Kerry were deemed vacant in Q4 2024.
68: Properties are currently for sale in South Kerry.
1: Property available to rent, you’d have a lovely view.
First, a word from this week’s sponsor
Ads €20 p/week for the close season. €50 p/month to be seen at least 2000 times by South Kerry’s greatest movers & shakers. I’m doing you a favour really.
We’re in the money…

In a week that saw pretty much every one of our local politicians celebrate a funding allocation of €7million+ to the South Kerry Greenway, Failte Ireland did something almost unique.
Whilst announcing funding for the redevelopment of the Bray Head tower on Valentia, Failte Ireland also announced… wait for it… a completion date! Well, before you get as excited as I am, they haven’t suggested an actual date, but they have indicated that the work will start next week & be completed in 7 months. So yes, it will be closed for the entire season, but there’s a completion date all the same.
The works planned include a rooftop viewing platform, which I imagine will be a boon for hanglider tourism if nothing else & a Ha-Ha viewing point. A Ha-Ha viewing point, according to the UK’s National Trust, is;
A type of sunken fence that was commonly used in landscaped gardens and parks in the 18th century. The point of the ha-ha was to give the viewer of the garden the illusion of an unbroken, continuous rolling lawn, whilst providing boundaries for grazing livestock.
Which sounds like an unusually sensible idea to me.
We Should Celebrate the Open in Close Season.
No one new this week. Is there anyone we should be visiting that we aren’t? Anyone now open that wasn’t?

Auntie Agnes Answers

This week, Agnes heals our very patient reader who missed out last week.
Dear Agnes,
I’m an elderly woman like you and I’m worried. All the current problems in the world keep me awake at night. But let’s discuss just one of them. One of my worries is that efforts to slow down climate change are losing out now that there are so many other conflicts that need our attention and funding. I fear for the future of my grandchildren. Will there be nature left for them? Clean air, clean beaches? All the perks we enjoy here, in South-West Kerry, can we preserve it for the future?
There are things we can do to help. OK, on a (very) small scale, but every little bit helps. Let’s try to waste less, buy less stuff on the internet, have less delivery vans on the road. Let’s increase recycling, do more to repair and upcycle our stuff, promote buying in charity shops.
I’m based near Kenmare and whenever I need a present for my grandchildren or for a friend, I visit the KLAWS shop on Main Street. Four out of five times I’m successful in finding a nice little present. It’s so rewarding, and good for my wallet too! And also, not unimportant, it helps animal welfare in our area.
Agnes, how can we stimulate recycling and increase awareness? How can we promote buying second hand, make it first choice?
Thank you so much for your time. Looking forward to your thoughts.
Agnes Answers;
Dearest Reader,
Thank you for sharing your woe. I would firstly like to address the sleeplessness caused by such worries. It is indeed an overwhelming experience to be up in the dead of night worrying about these real and serious problems. I share your fear for your grandchildren; I do worry also.
However, I take solace in the fact that there are indeed many people and organizations doing phenomenal work to preserve and protect our environments and nature. They are not reported by the media a lot of the time, as frankly, bad news gets more viewers. By listening to these news reports where it is all doom and gloom, we experience more anxiety. This leads us to feel fearful and overwhelmed. This sort of energy blocks us from seeing all the good that is being done and what we can do to help; all small steps help immensely. How would you eat an elephant? Small bites.
All our intentions and actions help the world. One of the most effective ways of supporting what we value is to model to families, friends, grandchildren and communities a way of taking care of our towns, beaches and planet. A great way of spending quality time with each other is to plant a little garden, clean the beach, mend some clothes. It sounds to me that you are on the right track Reader, keep going and please trust the world will work it out and get some sleep. You'll be no good to the world exhausted. Take care
So that’s Auntie Agnes all out of problems, let’s listen to our reader and don’t go wasting our valuable resource. A problem shared is a problem halved, A problem shared with Agnes, is a problem solved, just;
