Issue 62. Decisions, Traditions, Transmissions
REENROE, People, Tales, Tractors
Good Morning and Welcome,
To issue No.62. And a busy one it is too…
South Kerry by the numbers
2,099: More people were recorded as living in our area in the 2022 census than in 2016. That’s an 8.4% growth in 6 years.
58: % of us, are of working age (18-64).
89.1: Males for every 100 females within the 45-49 age group. Fabulous news for bachelors of a certain age across the region.

Reenroe, we have a decision

So yes, the council have said no to the latest attempt to develop the abandoned hotel on Reenroe beach. Planning was refused on 4 grounds, which can be broadly summarised as the proposed development, as outlined in the above, was just too big.
For a bit more detail;
The proposed development is in an area zoned ‘Visually Sensitive’ and doesn’t fit with the existing development plan for visitor accommodation.
The Planning Authority is not satisfied that the proposed development would not cause pollution of groundwater and surface waters.
The Planning Authority is not satisfied that the proposed development would not cause disruption to the public water supply in the Ballinskelligs Area during periods of high demand.
That the development would be contrary to the protection of the environment, biodiversity and natural heritage and the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
So that’s that. Case closed. An end to the story that has been running pretty much since this newsletter started. Farewell debate, it’s been emotional.
Oh & they do have 4 weeks to appeal…
Best Broadband in South Kerry?
So, last week, we had a load more. For any of you with numbers below 20Mbps, ring your supplier & find out the best spot in the house for your router. I 100% guarantee* it will improve. It would be great to get a couple of numbers for each townland. So, if any of you haven’t done this yet, would you hurry up and do it? Go here, click go, record the number below
*Figure is a suggestion only, broadband speeds may go down as well as up.
It’s The Signs of South Kerry 🎺🎺🎺
OK, this might not be an easy one, but it is a brilliant one. Welcome to the first, unsolicited, reader submission for the Signs of South Kerry. Ger Nugent, The Oracle salutes you.

Congratulations to last week’s winner
Dave Shortall
Highly impressive Dave. Can he make it three weeks at the top? Last week it was, of course, the plaque marking the transatlantic cable arrival at middle beach, Waterville.
