Issue 7. Turn it up to 11

New Councillors, an old phone. A bath in a forest, a ritual fire.

Good Morning and Welcome,

To issue No. 7. This week there’s a look at the lineup for this year’s Cahersiveen Music Festival. A rundown of our newly elected representatives & a closer look at Danny Healy-Rae’s old phone. Not forgetting all the best of what’s going on and what will be going on around the place.

South Kerry by the numbers:

  • 62.9: Percent of us turned out to vote in the local elections last week, fair play to us.

  • 13.5: Percent higher than the national average, aren’t we all very good?

  • 950: € per month will get you a two-bed apartment in Cahersiveen.

  • 475,000: € will get you a slice of one of the most sought after views around.

Candidates Elected

The whirlwind of local and European elections has now swept through and we have a full roster of elected representatives, I’d like to wish them all well whether returning to, or starting new roles. Many of you are no doubt delighted at the steady disappearance of 3 ft tall faces from the landscape, you’ll be equally pleased to hear they must all be removed, with associated paraphernalia, by midnight tonight or face a fine of €150, ouch!

Cahersiveen Music & Arts Festival

Saturday night’s headliner Aby Coulibaly is Lucan born RnB artist who has been bestowed with the ‘next big thing’ tag since emerging onto the scene in 2020. A fiercely independent artist running her own label/arts collective the Chamomile Club & releasing her own EP (coming later this year). From a mesmerising performance on the Late Late at the beginning of the year to supporting Coldplay in August in Croke Park, she’s very much one not to be missed. Cracking booking.

Friday night sees ‘The Drumlish Cowboy’ AKA Declan Nerney roll into town and Sunday night features folk legends Stocktons Wing. Great work from all involved, can’t wait.

What is wrong with this picture?

So, it’s a picture of Danny Healy-Rae, being interviewed by the Kerryman newspaper during the election count. In this beautiful soliloquy, he informs us he’s been using that phone since 1997! Isn’t he gas? Not only is he community spirited enough to keep us entertained during the monotony of an election, but he’s decent enough to not let the truth get in the way of a good story. The phone in his hand wasn’t available until 2002.
